CCTV Camera Maintenance: 6 Crucial Steps for 24/7 Reliability
Dust, monsoon humidity and power surges can blind your cameras. Follow this simple maintenance checklist to keep your system running.
A CCTV system is only useful if it actually records when something happens. In Bangladesh, dust storms, monsoon humidity, insects and sudden power fluctuations take a heavy toll on outdoor electronics. Regular upkeep ensures your system never fails you in an emergency.
1. Clean camera lenses and domes quarterly
Spiderwebs love the warmth of IR LEDs, and road dust creates a blurry halo around nighttime footage. Use a soft microfiber cloth and lens cleaning spray to wipe glass surfaces.
2. Verify DVR/NVR hard drive health
A hard drive that crashed a month ago won't help you today. Open your DVR menu and check the S.M.A.R.T. status of the surveillance hard drive once a month to ensure overwrite recording is active.
3. Check cable connections and weatherproof boxes
Inspect BNC connectors, RJ45 ports and waterproof pigtail boxes. Moisture entering an unsealed connector causes video loss or flickering lines.
4. Test power backup and UPS runtime
Unplug the UPS from the wall socket while the system is running. If the recorder reboots immediately, your UPS battery is dead and needs replacement.
5. Confirm camera focus and view angles
Tree branches grow, signs get hung and wind can nudge bullet cameras. Re-align cameras so key entryways and blind spots stay completely covered.
6. Update recorder firmware
Keep your DVR or NVR updated to protect against network vulnerabilities and ensure smooth mobile app streaming with Hik-Connect or Dahua DMSS.
